Weekly Address: America’s Resurgence Is Real

In this week’s address, the President reflected on the significant progress made by this country in 2014, and in the nearly six years since he took office.

This past year has been the strongest for job growth since the 1990s, contributing to the nearly 11 million jobs added by our businesses over a 57-month streak. America is leading the rest of the world, in containing the spread of Ebola, degrading and ultimately destroying ISIL, and addressing the threat posed by climate change. And earlier this week, the President announced the most significant changes to our policy towards Cuba in over 50 years.

America’s resurgence is real, and the President expressed his commitment to working with Congress in the coming year to make sure Americans feel the benefits.

NYC Police Union Chief Blames Mayor, Protesters For Police Killings

After the murder of two NYPD officers on Saturday, the outspoken head of the city’s primary police union blamed protesters and Mayor Bill de Blasio for the deaths of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.

“There’s blood on many hands tonight,” NYC Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association president Pat Lynch said Saturday night, ratcheting up already frigid tensions between City Hall and One Police Plaza.

Lynch blamed those who “incited violence on the street under the guise of protest,” — a reference to the swell of demonstrations in New York City and across the U.S. in the wake of a grand jury decision to not indict a New York police officer for killing an unarmed black man, Eric Garner, earlier this fall.

Lynch then went after Mayor de Blasio: “That blood on the hands starts on the steps of City Hall, in the office of the mayor.” He went on to praise the fallen officers, and said that those responsible for the killing will be held responsible. (Video above.)

Officers Liu and Ramos were shot dead “execution style” while in their patrol car on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, ambushed the officers, ran away to a nearby subway station, then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

The PBA has been highly critical of the mayor’s stance on police tactics and his support forprotests about police brutality. The union has also asked its members to ban the mayor from attending officer’s funerals.

Saturday night, the rank and file joined in when police officers deliberately turned their backs on de Blasio as he walked past after visiting with Liu and Ramos’ grieving families.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. 15 Damaging Myths About Life We Should All Stop Believing

1. There is a single definition of success.

And it involves an established career, large house, acceptable body shape, marriage and annual holidays.

Everyone has their own path to walk in this life, and what brings true meaning and deep fulfillment differs for all of us.

Let go of your need to fit to the status quo. Live, work, date, play, create, travel, eat, drink, move, laugh and sing in ways that feel right with your soul. That is true success.

2. Life is meant to be hard work.

Life is meant to be easy, beautiful and overflowing with moments of joy and bliss.

The more you listen to your soul and build a life that’s true to you, the more your actions will feel completely natural and effortless.

If life is a constant struggle, you’re running on empty and you dread Mondays, it’s time to take an honest look at your life — in a loving way.

3. Life happens to us.

Where you are now is a result of the choices you made in the past. Where you will be in the future is a result of the choices you are making right now.

You are an active participant in the creation of your life. So embrace your power as a creator, and start choosing thoughts, words and actions that make a positive impact and will come back to you in a million magnificent, beautiful, jaw-dropping ways.

4. There is such a thing as normal, and we should measure ourselves against it.

There is no such thing as a normal human, but there is such a thing as a “normal” you — where you’re completely yourself, you love yourself deeply and you think and act in ways that feel aligned with your soul.

Let your internal compass be your only point of reference.

5. There is an “us” and a “them.”

We draw a line around our social and family circles, keeping out everyone who doesn’t fit neatly within our definition of normal, interesting or worthwhile.

While everyone has vastly different aptitudes, passions and quirks, everyone also has the same light within them. The light within you is the same light within me, within the stranger on the bus, and within anyone you consider your enemy.

6. We have to compete for limited resources.

Life is meant to be abundant and limitless. We create scarcity by believing in it, instead of focusing our efforts on creating, giving and contributing our gift to help humankind reach its highest potential.

Relax and feel it deep within your heart that you will always be provided for.

7. Happiness comes from external things.

We pin our happiness on external things like our appearance, bank balance, job title, travel plans, possessions and the opinions of others — and then suffer as a result.

True, sustainable happiness comes from within — by cultivating a mindset based on gratitude, mindfulness and acceptance.

8. Holding grudges is a natural part of life.

When we feel that someone has “wronged” us, we cling to the memory and carry it around with us for weeks or sometimes years. What we fail to realize is that we are holding ourselves hostage, not just the perceived wrong-doer.

The Buddha once said, “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

Make forgiveness your new motto and see how much freer and lighter your soul feels.

9. There is something wrong with us.

We are plagued by feelings of inadequateness and worthlessness, postponing self-acceptance and self-love until a day in the future when we’re thinner, wealthier, more confident and more popular.

You are perfect and complete exactly as you are. Even when you are striving to improve and grow, you are complete. As the Buddhist saying goes, “We are all perfect as we are, and we could all use a little work.”

10. It matters what other people think of us.

We give away so much of our energy, power and inner peace by worrying about what others think of us.

The truth is we can’t ever know for certain what other people are thinking about us. So when your ego starts to fill you with doubt and fear, remember it’s a fictional story.

11. We see things how they really are.

How we experience the world is heavily influenced by our beliefs and past experiences.

Our subconscious mind chooses pieces of information to serve to our conscious mind based on what we’ve programmed it to look for. Identify your dominant beliefs and replace the ones that aren’t serving you.

12. Meditation is something people do on a cushion at sunrise.

You can meditate and be mindful all throughout the day as you go about your life.

Pause and feel the weight of your body in your seat, the feeling of the fabric against your skin, and the slight sensation of the air on your face.

Take a few deep breaths and let your whole being relax. Scan your body up and down for sensations, simply observing, without making any judgments.

13. When we give something, we lose something.

Giving and receiving are one in truth. When you give to someone with no strings attached — whether it be a physical gift, a compliment or your time — you are nourished as well as the receiver.

Not only do you experience sensations of satisfaction and joy, but your karma will bring more blessings and gifts back into your life.

14. We have to logically figure everything out.

We’ve been taught to trust our minds but not our intuition or inner voice of guidance.

When you’re grappling with a problem or lacking clarity, learn to lean into your soul and trust the wisdom it provides to you — often in the form of a gut feeling, serendipitous sign or a spontaneous “aha!” moment.

15. We need to be more realistic.

Many people think that daily happiness and joy is an unrealistic goal, and we should be more realistic.

Happiness is THE ultimate goal of our lives, and it is both worthwhile and attainable.

Understand your purpose is to blossom into the highest, happiest version of you and let go of any guilt you feel for making your happiness a priority.

The 10-Second Trick That Can Help You Lose Weight

There are plenty of arguments that advocate throwing away the bathroom scale, but a new study suggests daily weigh-ins may be a key component to weight loss.

The study, published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE and conducted by Elina Helander and co-authors from Tampere Univeristy of Technology in Finland, sampled 2,838 weight observations from 40 people attending a health program and found that when people weighed themselves daily they tended to lose weight, while taking breaks from daily weigh-ins for longer than one month led to weight gain in certain cases.

This isn’t the first time the odds have been in favor of the bathroom scale.

“Get out of bed, use the bathroom, then step on the scale. Every day,” personal trainer Marshall Roy advised in an article for Be Well Philly earlier this year. “It will give you a very reliable baseline and daily data point. It will fluctuate a little bit day to day, but when you look at all the numbers over the course of a week or month, trends will be obvious.”

And a University of Minnesota study, cited by Prevention magazine, surveyed 1,800 dieting adults and found that people who weighed themselves every day lost about 12 pounds over the course of two years, while people who weighed themselves every week lost only 6 pounds.

So if weight loss is one of your New Year’s resolutions, be advised: The scale may be a better friend than you thought.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership and Financial Regulatory Reform

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for America to set the rules for global trade in the 21st century. The agreement aims to expand access to the world’s fastest-growing markets, even as we enshrine higher standards of protection for workers and consumers.

Recently, questions have arisen over how we will protect the progress toward a safer financial system that we have made since the crisis in the context of these trade negotiations. President Obama inherited a financial crisis that was the consequence of years of poor financial regulation, and he made Wall Street reform a top priority as he worked with Congress to craft a set of historic protections that ultimately became the Dodd-Frank Act. Since he signed that legislation in 2010, his Administration has made significant progress implementing its key provisions. Just as important, the President has pushed for stronger rules across the globe through the G-20 and other venues, and he has also fought against repeated attempts to undermine Wall Street reform here at home. He will do whatever it takes to make our financial system stronger and more stable.

Why Won’t the FDA Let Me Donate Blood?

I have type O-negative blood; I am what’s called a “universal donor.” My blood is the most sought-after because no matter what type of blood you have, you can receive O-negative blood. For that reason, in the event of an emergency, first responders bring O-negative blood to the scene.

I was in New York City on 9/11, and blood banks, which were inundated by people who wanted to donate, would only accept O-negative blood.

I am a happily married man; we’ve been together for seven years, and we are monogamous and happy. We live in a row house with a porch swing and a white fence; we volunteer in our communities; we both work in the public interest.

Our nation is facing a major blood shortage, “one of the worst [shortages] that the Red Cross has seen,” according to the Red Cross.

But a blood bank won’t take my blood, because they can’t. I am a gay man, and the FDA forbids it.

I tell this to my straight friends, and they can’t believe it, but it’s true. According to the FDA:

Having had a low number of partners is known to decrease the risk of HIV infection. However … [the FDA has been unable to] reliably identify a subset of MSM (e.g., based on monogamy or safe sexual practices) who do not still have a substantially increased rate of HIV infection compared to the general population or currently accepted blood donors.

You heard that right: Despite being in a seven-year monogamous relationship, I am still, somehow, at a higher risk of contracting HIV.

Recently, an FDA advisory panel considered walking back that prohibition by proposing a rule that would have allowed gay men to donate blood if they abstained from sex for one year. By their logic, if I stopped sleeping with my husband for 365 days, my risk for HIV would be magically reduced and I would be allowed me to donate blood.

The lack of logic, on its face, is mind-boggling, especially when you consider that both the American Red Cross and the American Medical Association have said that the ban is scientifically outdated and unnecessary.

But this is far more than just a policy relic that is caught in the slow churn of bureaucratic regulatory reform. No, this is of course another in a litany of double standards that the LGBT community faces.

Heterosexuals (regardless of their character) can serve in the military, but the LGBT community had to fight for our right to fight (and die) for our country. Heterosexuals (regardless of their character) can marry (and divorce) in all 50 states; the LGBT community has had to push — state by state, one by one — for our right to commit to the person we love. Heterosexuals (regardless of their character) can adopt; same-sex couples can jointly petition to adopt statewide in only 23 states and D.C.

On 9/11, after the towers fell to ash, I approached Second Avenue, headed toward the New York Blood Center. There were no cars on the streets, just thousands of people making a slow exodus north to their homes. The line to give blood was three blocks long.

Standing on the corner of 67th Street, I faced one of the most acute moral quandaries I’ve yet to confront: Do I lie about my identity to help my fellow brothers and sisters, or do I stay true to myself and know that the Red Cross would, by law, dispose of my blood?

    * * *

The FDA recently rejected the Advisory Panel’s one-year-abstinence recommendation and elected to keep the permanent ban in place.

One of the doctors who voted for the ongoing ban clearly found the debate to be an irritant; she was quoted complaining that “[i]t sounds to me like we’re talking about policy and civil rights….”

Damn right. And no policy should force me to lie so I can give back.

What An Entrepreneur, A Singer And A President’s Nephew Wish They’d Known Ages Ago (VIDEO)

It’s something Oprah loves to ask during her interviews: What advice would you give to your younger self? When Arianna Huffington, Grammy-winning singer Alanis Morissette and JFK’s nephew Timothy Shriver appeared on recent episodes of “Super Soul Sunday,” Oprah asked each of them this poignant question — and received some very revealing answers.

“I would say, ‘Stop worrying,’” Arianna says. “There is so much unnecessary worry, so many unnecessary self-judgments, so many negative fantasies about the future.”

    Prayers, Facebook and Weight Loss

    2014-12-20-DonMcNayProfille20101.JPG

“When people talk to God, it is called prayer. When God talks to people, they call it schizophrenia.” — Dr. Jim Roach in his upcoming book, God’s House Calls

Just like a prayer. Your voice can take me there” — Madonna

Until recently, my attitude toward prayer had been guided by President Harry S. Truman who said that “people who pray the loudest are the ones you lock your hen house from.” I’ve always been intensely suspicious of anyone who seems too overt in their embrace of prayer, especially if the conversation deviates to matters concerning my checkbook or wallet.

Praying out loud was something I never did. Until Facebook came along.

I’ve been an active Facebook member since the time it was opened up to non-college students, and I have thousands of people in my network. I’ve connected with friends from kindergarten to people I have never met at all. It’s one of my most important communication tools.

People post good and bad news on Facebook. I do too. On my bad days, people frequently respond, “I’m praying for you.” After a while, I started to do the same. What else can you say to someone who posts that they just came back from cancer treatment or had one of their parents die? Clicking on the “like” sign is not really appropriate and the long awaited “dislike” button would be worse. Saying something like, “I’m sorry” seems helpless and unconcerned, but praying for someone is a proactive way to be in their corner.

All of this brings me to the gastric sleeve weight loss surgery that I had on December 1.

I’ve only really had two taboo subjects in life: my weight and prayer. Prayer has been guided by my Harry Truman prism and my weight has been guided by the fact that I’ve been in denial about it.

Laura Babbage, co-author of Life Lessons from Cancer and a hospital chaplain, recently put me onto the book A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis. Lewis connects because he is completely honest about his emotions after the death of his wife. My writing influences have often been songwriters like Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne. They put their lives out there for the public to see.

Hiding anything goes against who I am. I’ve had times when my faith in many things has been challenged, but my faith in the first amendment has been rock solid my entire life. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press, along with freedom of religion and expression, are part of who I am.

I am thrilled to live in a time when people all over the world have the ability to say what is on their minds via social media. Like at any point in history, there can be consequences, including death, for speaking out, but the ability to actually get “on the record” and influence others is only going to improve over time. Technology is a tool to defeat repression and totalitarianism. In this era of reasonably free expression, not being open about my weight and not openly praying contradicted who I am.

I never knew the two topics would tie together.

    2014-12-20-Project199BookCover.jpg

I reached a point this summer where I weighed 377 pounds. It might have actually been higher, but I rarely went near the scale. I’m 55, but started having ailments like someone 30 years older. Not only was I morbidly obese, it would have taken a 20 percent drop in my weight before I fell out of that category. I had been fortunate; I just turned diabetic, but had never had a stroke, heart attack, went blind or had them start chopping body parts off. All that comes with morbid obesity. Then you die.

I knew I was a ticking time bomb. A life in the insurance and structured settlement business means I can digest morality tables with the best of them, and I knew I would be lucky to make it to age 64. I could also see it would be a lousy last nine years. I never wanted to be a person who road around the grocery store on a motorized cart and especially not 20 years before my life expectancy. All of the sudden, the cart seemed part of my future.

I had an extreme fear of surgery, but it was time to make a bold move. I was in a bad position from an insurance standpoint. In the state of Kentucky, it is impossible for a small business owner like me to purchase health care coverage that would cover weight loss surgery. People on Medicaid and Medicare can get the surgery, and many people at large corporations have plans that cover them. As does everyone in about 27 other states. I happened to live in one of the states, almost all in the Deep South, that does not make their insurance carrier offer weight loss surgery.

I didn’t mind paying for the surgery out of pocket, which is what I ultimately did. What really bothered me is that my Anthem plan, just like every other small business or individual plan in Kentucky, did not offer coverage for COMPLICATIONS from surgery. If I had a heart attack during surgery and ran up a million dollar bill, my family and I were out of luck.

Since I knew I was dying (they don’t call it “morbid obesity” for nothing), I was willing to roll the dice and hope the surgery would go well (which it did) and pay any medical bills if it went wrong. I went to a Lexington hospital and they threw me out of the introductory meeting when they saw my insurance card. Not only was it embarrassing, it also made me think that every other hospital would do the same. I was wrong.

There is that point where God takes you to the right spot, even if you don’t know that is where you are going. Mine happened in August.

I read that Georgetown Community Hospital, just outside of Lexington, was a Bariatric Center of Excellence and that it was one of the hospitals where Dr. Derek Weiss, who has a tremendous reputation, did surgery.

It occurred to me that Dr. Jim Roach might have a connection at Georgetown. Dr. Jim is internationally famous in the world of integrated medicine and has lived his entire life in Midway, a few miles from Georgetown.

    2014-12-20-DrJimRoach.jpg

He created a fascinating Center for Integrative Medicine that is intensely popular. Dr. Phil Hoffman (father of Babydaddy of the Scissor Sisters) has been my longtime “primary physician,” but for a couple of years, I went to Dr. Jim in addition to Phil. The last time I had seen Jim had been at my wedding a few years ago. Dr. Jim stays constantly booked far in advance, and I gave my last appointment to a friend with stage four cancer (Jim does a wonderful job for people with cancer) and never myself got back on the list.

Dr. Jim was glad to hear from me and got me to a contact at the Georgetown Hospital. When I got to Georgetown, it turns out that Dr. Weiss offers a specialty insurance program called Blis that pays for complications if something goes wrong during surgery. I purchased the Blis and it allowed me to have the weight loss surgery on December 1.

Dr. Jim mentioned he was writing a book. I own RRP International Publishing and Digital Media, and we have a detailed process for vetting every potential book, including those that I write. For the only time in our history, I cut short the process and asked Dr. Jim if he had a publisher. He said he was looking for one. I told him he had just found one.

I guess I should have asked what he was writing about, but I assumed it would be Integrated Medicine. Dr. Jim has a huge following and is well-educated, so I assumed anything he wrote would sell well.

When I got around to asking, it turns out that his topic was a spiritual one. His book, God’s House Calls, which will be released in March, is about hundreds of his patients who have received messages from God in some form. He hopes the book will help remove the stigma surrounding these spiritual and supernatural experiences that so many are afraid to speak on and validate.

It’s working its way through the final editing process, but Jim is an excellent writer and it is a fascinating and touching book. I shared with Dr. Jim my own story. I’ll give all the details in a future article, but I had two “house calls from God” in my own life. One was a phone call from my father at a moment when he was actually dead, but was brought back to life for a few more hours. I got to see him in his last hour because of that phone call. Another was on the day when my niece Lyndsay Francis was born. My former wife witnessed the second incident, but I’ve never told many people about either. The line that Dr. Jim uses, “If you talk to God, it is called prayer; if God talks to you, it is called schizophrenia,” rang way too true for me. They both happened and only a spiritual connection would explain it, but it still seemed like a taboo subject.

Jim is an intense and devoted physician and researcher. He is the last person to go off on a wild tangent, but sometimes the spirit moves you to tell your story to a wider audience. Jim needed a publisher and I needed weight loss surgery. We got each other to where we needed to be.

    This brings me to Facebook.

I spent the months of September through November getting every aspect of my life together for the weight loss surgery, which ultimately happened on December 1. I’ve been swept up in all the wonderful things that have happened, and I’m writing two books about it, both with the title Project 199. The first will be out on August 28 of next year.

I needed to confront how heavy I actually was. I weighed 377 pounds when I went into the program at Georgetown. I posted that online and wondered how my Facebook community (and later my Huffington Post audience) would react. Note that I weighed 45 pounds more than William “The Refrigerator” Perry did when he played for the 1985 Chicago Bears.

The Fridge was an object of ridicule because of his weight. I could only imagine what people would say about me.

The reaction was 100 percent supportive. I never got one negative comment and I had hundreds of people write and say, “I’m praying for you.”

Several people had their entire church or congregation pray for me. Some were like a childhood friend in Indianapolis or a college buddy in Pennsylvania, and neither had I seen in decades. All of them were leading a focused message to God, in whatever form or faith in which they worshiped God, to let my surgery be successful.

    It was.

Even before I went in, all of the prayers made a huge impact on me. I posted this note on Facebook the night before the surgery.

I am touched and greatly appreciate the outpouring of prayers and support as I go to surgery tomorrow. One of my greatest blessings is my ability to connect with wonderful people. In a world where there are billions of people worse off than me, I wonder if God is tired of hearing about me, but I truly appreciate it.

My four a.m. wake up call will be one I can’t miss, but I have reached a Zen-like calm. I’ve done everything possible for a good outcome and have contingency plans for every possible bump along the road. This will go smoothly.

Lifted by the confidence derived from hundreds of people praying for me, I leap out of bed on December 1 and was up before the four a.m. wake up call. My surgery could not have gone better and I went home the next day. I’ve lost 52 pounds at the time I write this and have no doubt that I will make it to 199 pounds. Diabetes looks to be in my rear view mirror. My blood sugar has been normal, without any kind of medications, since the day after surgery. I feel terrific. Well, I am still recovering from surgery, but other than that, I feel better than I have in years.

I have no doubt that the power of the prayers from my Facebook friends were part of the successful outcome.

As we roll into the final weeks of the year 2014, I have a lot to be thankful for. I’ve stared down my weight loss demon and I’ve gone public on my weight and the power of prayer, two things that have hung over me like a curse.

I am in the healthiest place spiritually, physically and emotionally that I have ever been in my life and the books that come out of this experience, by me and Dr. Jim, are going to be very successful.

I really can’t wait for 2015 to get here. I have many dreams, plans and goals that I want to make happen.

In reflecting back on 2014, one thing is for certain: It’s been one hell of a year.

Obama Intends to Lift Several Restrictions Against Cuba on His Own

WASHINGTON — President Obama will move as soon as next month to defang the 54-year-old American trade embargo against Cuba, administration officials said Thursday, using broad executive power to defy critics in Congress and lift restrictions on travel, commerce and financial activities.

The moves are only the beginning of what White House officials and foreign policy experts describe as a sweeping set of changes that Mr. Obama can make on his own to re-establish commercial and diplomatic ties with Cuba even in the face of angry congressional opposition.

13 Ways I Live My Life With Purpose After Cancer

Are any of you out there superstitious and think the number 13 is synonymous with bad luck? Well, I’m currently loving the number “13″ and am feeling very lucky. Because, this month, I’m celebrating 13 years since I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. That’s right — it’s my cancerversary!

Although I didn’t always feel empowered or plan on becoming a cancer advocate, I found strength in following a few simple life rules I learned along the way. In honor of my cancerversary, I want to share with you 13 ways I now live my life with purpose after cancer:

    1. No longer sweat the small stuff. I know just how short life can be. Therefore, I don’t want to waste time on things (or people!) that really don’t matter.

    2. Cherish the people who really matter to you. Cancer taught me who my true friends were and my circle became much smaller. That annoying friend that you’re always ducking… just cut them loose. That family member that makes you so uncomfortable…you may not be able to cut them loose, but you can cut them back… seriously, way back. Your time is precious. Choose to spend it with people who matter.

    3. Love the skin you’re in. For the longest time, I yearned for my life before cancer. The truth is that you are no longer that person. Embrace the new you. It just might surprise you!

    4. Stop living in the past. Don’t let your experience keep you from living. I have an acquaintance in the cancer community that I see on a regular basis and she is so afraid to live. She lives in fear, constantly, always waiting for cancer to reemerge. I get it. I really do. But those of us who are still here are blessed to be alive, no matter the physical or emotional limitations. So live… like never before.

    5. Enjoy life. Prior to cancer, I hardly ever took vacations. Typically, I would take one in the summer and another at Christmas. I never thought I had enough time, money or a break in the workload. You have to rest and reset. All work and no play… you know the rest!

    6. Dance (and sing!) like no one is watching. It’s okay to be silly and happy. So just go ahead and do it. It’s good for your soul.

    7. Let go of what’s holding you back. When you are faced with mortality, you start thinking of all the things that are left unaccomplished or need a do-over. You have to learn to let those things go. For me, it was finally realizing that a certain level of my career would never be obtained. I fought it for years, but the truth is that I’m so much more passionate about different things now. My priorities have completely changed. So, I let it go. I made a new, more up-to-date list of goals and I am going for it.

    8. Enjoy every little morsel. I enjoy everything. Seriously. Every bite of food, drink, kiss from my hubby…everything! You don’t know when it’s going to be your last. So savor it.

    9. Be adventurous. Do things that scare the crap out of you. Why? Because they remind you that you’re still here. Since surviving cervical cancer, I’ve traveled around the world alone (I have a slight fear of long plane rides); I’ve take a toboggan down the Great Wall of China (I had to climb it first); I’ve learned how to swim (something that’s very hard to do as an adult); I rode an African Elephant (it’s very scary and unsteady up there); and I took a chance on love and all of its endless possibilities (yay, for love!)

    10. It’s OK to reflect. You can’t truly appreciate how far you’ve come unless you look back on where you’ve been. But, remember it’s just a reflection. Don’t let it consume you.

    11. Have a pity party. What happened to you was messed up. Doesn’t matter whether it’s Stage 0 or Stage 4 — cancer is not fun. So, take time to be sad, to accept the blow you’ve been dealt. But remember – you have to move on and fight for your life, because it’s going to take everything you’ve got — mentally and physically.

    12. Give back. Volunteer, give financially, get involved. There are so many amazing cancer organizations out there — especially the smaller grassroots movements. Cancer centers are always looking for people. Think about what you needed while you were going through treatment. What would have made a difference to you? Go back to your cancer center and make it happen. Recruit friends and family.

    13. Be happy. You are ALIVE! So go and be happy. When my mother was alive, she would often say to me, “You are always so happy. I hope you are always happy.” So, I make it a point to be just that – happy! Don’t get me wrong – I still am human. So, there are times when I find myself sad, angry or just plain unhappy. It is in those moments that I remember that I am still here and I don’t want to waste a moment being unhappy.

Pizza Hut’s Pizza Is Saltier In America Than Anywhere Else In The World

America, we’ve got a salt problem.

This year, the CDC reported that nine out of 10 kids in the U.S. consume too much salt. This is not because children are latched on to the salt shaker, but rather the foods they most commonly eat (like pizza, burgers, meats and cheeses) are already laden with the stuff. American adults have not grown out of the habit. The FDA recommends the average American consumes no more than 2,300 mg of salt per day, but the average American ingests about 1,000 mg over budget.

It seems limiting our salt consumption may be easier said than done. A recent international survey released by World Action on Salt & Health found that Pizza Hut pizzas in the U.S. contain about 70 percent more salt than the same pizzas in Canada and New Zealand. Because the chain sells different menu items internationally, the survey examined five pizzas that have the most global continuity. Served stateside, the Pepperoni Thin ‘N Crispy pizza contains 1,080 milligrams of sodium for every half slice. In Canada, that same half slice contains 718 milligrams of sodium. The salt was measured in milligrams per 3.5 ounce of pizza to eliminate the influence of portion size.

We shouldn’t have to cross the border to reduce our sodium intake. “If Pizza Hut can serve less salty pizzas to their customers in Canada and New Zealand, the company should be able to slash salt levels in the American versions of the same — and all its other — pizzas,” said Michael F. Jacobson, the executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

The dangers of consuming excess salt run the gamut: obesity, stroke and heart attack are just a few of the risks linked with overdoing it.

It’s not just Pizza Hut: A 2012 study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal revealed that fast food tended to be saltier in the U.S. than in other countries. Why this is seems to be a mystery. As Health.com reports, excess salt is not reflected in consumer demand or local tastes, and the U.S. is not limited in its food-processing technology, meaning sodium could be reduced if more specific guidelines were enforced.

Even more, Pizza Hut slices in the U.S. were reported to be 40 percent larger than in other countries, which means when an American consumer eats a full meal at Pizza Hut, he or she is being set up to consume more calories, fat and salt than a person in another country doing the exact same thing. This isn’t so surprising; Food portion size has been on the rise for decades in the U.S. And, in a logical correlation, so have obesity rates.

The Pizza Hut review highlights a nation-wide crisis worth prioritizing. If America wants to get healthy, it appears the time has come to reevaluate the relationship Americans and the food industry have with food.

Watch: The President’s Science Advisor Answers Your Questions About Climate Change

    Watch on YouTube

Last month, Dr. John Holdren — the President's science advisor – invited the public to ask him anything about climate change on social media using the hashtag #AskDrH.

Since then, he's gotten a lot of questions. Brandon, a seventh-grader, wanted to know if climate change will affect him during his lifetime. A number of people asked whether climate change is driving extreme events, like the heavy snowfall we've seen recently in Buffalo, New York. Some people wanted to know what Dr. Holdren is doing to prevent climate change himself.

And Dr. H answered. In a video series we're releasing today, Dr. Holdren answers some of the questions you asked about our climate, and explains some of the science behind how our planet is changing.

    Hillary’s Choice: “Anti-Gridlock” or “Anti-Wall Street”?

We’re told that Hillary Clinton is spurning something her advisors call the “anti-Wall Street” movement and will run instead on a platform of “working across the aisle” with Republicans. Her camp is suggesting, without much evidence and against the lessons of recent history, that she will be more effective at this endeavor than her predecessor. And now they’re using that claim to fight against the Democratic Party’s rising populist wing.

Is Hillary Clinton about to repeat Barack Obama’s biggest mistake?

In the first two years of his presidency Obama spoke of compromise, protected Wall Street, and resisted the populist wing of his own party. Democrats lost the House of Representatives, but Obama kept offering “Grand Bargains.” The GOP rejected most of his overtures, even the Social Security benefit cuts they had long championed, and didn’t hesitate to use them against Democrats on the campaign trail.

By selling himself as someone who could get things done with Republicans, Obama gave them the power to make him a success or failure. Unsurprisingly, they chose the latter option. Is Hillary Clinton about to make the same mistake – and will voters buy it if she does?

    An “anti-gridlock” movement?

In an article in The Hill headlined “Clinton quiet as Warren rises,” Amie Parnes reports that unnamed Clinton associates aren’t concerned about the public’s frustration with Wall Street or the rising expressions of populism in her own party (as seen in the fight against the “Cromnibus” bill’s “Citigroup amendment“).

“I don’t think she would have considered the legislation deeply flawed,” a Clinton “ally” is quoted as saying of a measure which threatened the pensions of an estimated 1.5 million Americans, increased the influence of big money in politics, and extended taxpayer protection to big banks gambling on derivatives.

“Clinton allies … think that a bigger movement than the anti-Wall Street camp favors her candidacy,” reports Parnes: “the anti-gridlock movement.”

    What the polls really say.

These sources are probably basing their conclusion on polls like this one, which found a 31-point swing since 2010 toward candidates who are willing to compromise. The Wall Street Journal reported on that poll a couple of weeks before this year’s election, under the headline “Gridlock Could Prove Costly at the Polls.” In fact, there were a number of headlines like that in the weeks leading up the the voting. (“Voters finally fed up with gridlock,” opined USA Today.)

Voters then promptly opted for a whole lot more of it.

Democrats who adopted the “across the aisle” line now being touted for Clinton either went down to larger defeats than expected (Alison Lundergan Grimes, Mark Pryor) or found themselves eking out unexpectedly narrow victories (Mark Warner).

Gridlock doesn’t appear to be a “valence issue,” one which sways voters. Only 33 percent ranked it as their first or second priority, a figure which edged out concerns about ISIS but fell well behind the 44 percent whose priorities were jobs and growth.

    A tactic, not a value

Nevertheless, Clinton insiders are quoted in The Hill as saying things like

“Voters are tired of a dysfunctional Washington and want leaders who can make the government work.”

    And,

“When she was in the Senate, she worked across the aisle. And she knows she’s going to have to do the same thing should she become president.”

Barack Obama took the same tack. The result was more Republican obstructionism, more Republican threats – and, eventually, more Republicans in Congress.

The messaging is as problematic as the governance. A focus on “gridlock” emphasizes process over policy. Compromise is a tactic, not a value. Campaigning on tactics is likely to be seen as a way to avoid sensitive issues, and that will undermine trust in the candidate.

    It’s still the economy.

Voters’ top priority, according to the same polling which addressed gridlock, remains what it’s been since 2008: “job creation and economic growth.” And it’s in the economic arena that the comments from Clinton’s unnamed “allies” and advisors raise the most alarm.

For one thing, we’re told that Clinton insiders view Sen. Elizabeth Warren (rather dismissively) as an “anti-Wall Street crusader.”

    Said a former aide:

“There’s a perception out there that (Clinton) is Wall Street’s biggest champion. That’s not true. She’s just more moderate. And she thinks that we’ve got to support Wall Street within reason.”

But “supporting Wall Street within reason” is not a sentiment that’s likely to be well-received by the public.

The polls (aggregated here) tell the story: 80 percent of voters believe politicians already do too much to support Wall Street, 79 percent of Americans view Wall Street unfavorably, and 60 percent of likely voters favor stricter regulations on banks and other financial institutions.

    Candidate’s choice

The presumed candidate has yet to speak out on this issue. She would be well-advised to do so soon – and to join the “anti-Wall Street” camp, instead of relying on vague and platitudinous pronouncements about “making government work.”

Right-winger Jennifer Rubin did Hillary Clinton an unintended favor by writing that the former Secretary of State “sits on the sidelines, or in a cushy chair fielding softball questions from corporate hosts in exchange for $ 200,000 speaking fees.

Rubin’s words offer the Democratic candidate fair warning: the right will almost certainly hammer away at this them over the next two years, running to Clinton’s left (at least in perception) by emphasizing her ties to Wall Street and other corporate interests. Many on the left will echo these criticisms, especially if she fails to offer any evidence to the contrary.

These perceptions can’t be fought with unsupportable promises about ending gridlock. And a candidate who “supports Wall Street within reason” – offering only unsupportable tactical promises while most Americans fret about the economy – is a candidate in danger of losing, no matter what the polls may say today.

Email from President Obama: “The U.S. and Cuba”

Earlier today, President Obama sent this message to the White House email list about his recent announcement on Cuba. Didn't get it? Make sure you sign up for email updates here.

Yesterday, after more than 50 years, we began to change America's relationship with the people of Cuba.

We are recognizing the struggle and sacrifice of the Cuban people, both in the U.S. and in Cuba, and ending an outdated approach that has failed to advance U.S. interests for decades. In doing so, we will begin to normalize relations between our two countries.

I was born in 1961, just over two years after Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, and just as the U.S. severed diplomatic relations with that country.

Our complicated relationship with this nation played out over the course of my lifetime — against the backdrop of the Cold War, with our steadfast opposition to communism in the foreground. Year after year, an ideological and economic barrier hardened between us.

That previous approach failed to promote change, and it's failed to empower or engage the Cuban people. It's time to cut loose the shackles of the past and reach for a new and better future with this country.

I want you to know exactly what our new approach will mean.
